About Organ Donation

In 2007, more than 13,000 people chose to give the gift of life. Because of their selfless gifts, more than 26,000 people were saved.

  • One organ donor can save up to 8 people.
  • Nearly 100,000 people in the United States are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, including almost 1,500 of our Northwest neighbors.
  • Sadly, 18 people die each day waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

Notes on Research

There are misunderstandings about organ donation and the use of organs for research. When the donation process begins, organs are recovered with the intent of use for life saving transplant. Organs are not recovered for the sole purpose of research. Once removed, if the organs are found to be unsuitable for transplant or a recipient cannot be found they may be provided for research. The entire body is not donated for research.

Living Kidney Donation

Living Kidney Donation is when a living person chooses to give a kidney to someone in need through organ donation. Kidney donation can be directed to a friend or relative, or donated to any person on the waiting-list in greatest need.
