About Eye Donation

46,000 people a year have their sight restored through corneal transplant.

  • Not only is the cornea used, the sclera (the white part of the eye) is needed for ocular graft surgery in the treatment of eye disease.
  • One eye donor can help up to 10 people.
  • Corneal transplant has a success rate that exceeds 95%.
  • Anyone can be an eye donor. Cataracts, poor eyesight (wearing glasses or contacts), or age do not prohibit eye donation.

Notes on Research

Unlike organ and tissue donation, where the option to donate to research is only available after all attempts are made for transplant, the eyes can be designated for research only. Hundreds of thousands of people are helped through the research for cures for blinding diseases.
